Hypertension Symptoms - Am I At Risk?

If you think that you have high blood pressure, it is important for you to thoroughly investigate and deal with any hypertension symptoms you may currently have. While the cause of high blood pressure in unknown, it generally results from a variety of risk factors. Being aware of these factors will help you prevent the disease or cope with any existing hypertension symptoms.

Age plays an important role in your risk for developing high blood pressure and the associated medical consequences.  Usually men tend to develop the disease before age 54. After age 54, the disease is equally prevalent in both men and women. Estrogen seems to protect women up to age 54, but hypertension symptoms start developing later as menopause approaches. Being pregnant is also a risk factor.

It is especially important to be aware of any symptoms you might have if any of your family members have developed the disease. It tends to run in families and your high blood pressure risks increase dramatically if any family member has experienced it. Ultimately, be very aware and educated about your family’s medical history.

Your ethnic background plays a major role in the risk of developing high blood pressure. It appears that African Americans and Native Americans have a much higher chance of their ethnic members developing the hypertension symptoms. Compared to Caucasian Americans, symptoms appear earlier in life for African and Native Americans and the resulting blood pressure readings are at a higher level.

One way of delaying or decreasing symptoms and dealing with high blood pressure is to avoid certain food known to be contributing factors in the disease. Research has found that higher levels of salt in your diet is one major risk factor in high blood pressure disease. Also, avoiding obesity by decreasing fats in your diet tends to lessen your chances of contracting it.

A final way to deal with high blood pressure is to eliminate any undo stress in your daily life. Being anxious about daily occurrences, handling anger in a violent and intense way and holding anger in make it more likely that your blood pressure will be higher than the average persons. It is important for you to keep your life on an even keel and try to avoid as much stress as possible if you want to live a long and healthy life.

If you are susceptible to any of the above risk factors, then it is extremely important for you to watch for common hypertension symptoms. However, be aware that unless your blood pressure is extremely high it is unlikely that any identifiable symptoms will surface. If you have had high blood pressure for a long time, the chances are great that you will experience damage to your internal organs and perhaps sustain long-term eye damage as well. Make your golden years better and perhaps extend them by avoiding as much as possible the risk factors associated with high blood pressure.
